Fuel, oil and power train

Cat® Filters are built to the most stringent Caterpillar® specifications. The challenge for Caterpillar engineers is to ensure that your engines, fuel system components and power train are protected from contamination every day – for the life of the machine.

  • Cat filters have design features not found in other filters.

Another feature that defines Cat filters is the robust housing that protects each filter. Its one-piece design withstands high pressure drops, provides cold starts and eliminates the possibility of leaks.

Polyacrylic granules

Only Cat® filters contain polyacrylic beads to prevent the pleated filter paper from sticking together, a common problem found in virtually all filters.

If the folds of the filter element stick together, then the working surface of the filter is significantly reduced. As a result, the filter can go into bypass mode, with contamination entering the engine or other systems. Therefore, filters from other manufacturers may need to be replaced before the prescribed replacement interval is reached.

The situation is completely different with Cat filters. Thanks to polyacrylic granules, the distance between the pleated folds remains unchanged, while the maximum area of ​​its working surface is ensured throughout the entire service life of the filter, which in turn provides an increased dirt holding capacity of the filter.

Cat filters are guaranteed to maintain their properties for the full recommended life and do not pose a risk of shortening the life of components and systems. The result is fewer annual filter changes, less machine downtime and lower operating costs.

Cat filter paper folds are kept constant with polyacrylic beads to maximize filter surface area for better engine and component protection and longer life than other filter brands.

Spiral roving

Cat® filters use a unique fiberglass spiral roving to stiffen the pleated pleats and prevent them from shifting due to pressure changes.

The pleated folds of filters from other manufacturers may shift or “bend”. In this case, the released contaminants can get into the oil, fuel or hydraulic fluid and lead to premature wear of units and parts.

With spiral roving, Cat filters not only trap, but also reliably trap contaminants for the most efficient filtration.

If the pleats do not move, debris remains in the filter and does not enter the engine, power train or hydraulic system.

Every time the machine or engine is started, cold liquid flows through the filter. Without the stability of the corrugated folds provided by spiral roving, a significant amount of previously trapped contaminants are released. These particles enter the system, causing additional wear on units and parts, and must be removed again.

Cat fiberglass spiral roving of filters stabilizes pleats and holds them in place for improved filtration. In the case of fuel filters, the released particles are not re-filtered and lead to abrasive wear of the injectors. The diagram shows the advantage of using spiral roving.

Centeral tube

Unlike other filters, Cat filters use a nylon center tube to eliminate the possibility of contamination of internal cavities by metal particles. Non-metallic center tubes are 30% stronger than metallic ones.

Only Cat filters have non-metallic center tubes for better protection of engines and other systems.

In conventional filters, the center tubes are made of metal, and metal particles from the manufacturing process of the filter can remain in the filter.

Metal particles can scuff bearings and damage other critical system components.

Cat filter center tubes have a distinct advantage as they are made of fiberglass-reinforced nylon instead of metal. Therefore, the likelihood of contamination with metal particles is completely excluded. These center tubes are cleaner and really protect assemblies and parts without risking damage. In addition, Cat non-metallic filter center tubes are 30% stronger than conventional metal tubes, which reduces the chance of rupture during pressure shocks or during cold starts.

Cast end covers

Cat filter end covers are formed by immersing the pleated filter pleats in molten polyurethane to form a virtually impermeable layer that protects system components from contamination.

Cat Filters virtually eliminate contaminants from entering the engine, power train or hydraulic system with one-piece molded polyurethane end covers. lters, the end covers are made of metal and glued directly to the pleated filter pleats. As a result, gaps can form between the metal end cover and the corrugated folds through which contaminants can enter the system.

Cat filters are designed to provide structural integrity by forming the end cover by dipping the pleated pleats into the molten polyurethane. As the polyurethane hardens, an impermeable layer forms between the pleats and end covers. The risk of gaps formation is excluded, while contamination remains in the filter and does not enter the system. Cat filters also use a one-piece aluminum base to further protect components from leaks and metal contamination.

Contamination control

Contaminated fuel is the most dangerous enemy of the engine. This “invisible enemy” takes away some power of the engine, causes wear on precision-made components and increases fuel consumption. It is very important to keep the fuel and fuel system clean. As fuel injection pressures increase and clearances decrease in modern diesel engines, the requirements for fuel cleanliness also increase. Only clean fuels provide the best machine performance, fuel economy, high performance and long life.

One of the most important elements of a contamination control program is the use of highly filtered Cat fuel filters. They are specially designed for modern diesel engines using fine cellulose-based synthetic materials for better filtration.

The components of a modern fuel system are very sensitive to fuel contamination, but you have the ability to maintain high engine performance and extend component life by following simple guidelines.

Not all filters are the same. Many filter manufacturers do not take into account the increased requirements of modern systems for cleanliness and such filters do not provide full protection for engines and other components and assemblies, and their use may be simply pointless.
